150. Artikel
(Oceani occidentalis seu Terrae Novae tabula)
Rare, 1525 issue of Lorenz Fries’ publication of Martin Waldseemüller’s 1513 woodcut. Following Waldseemüller’s death, in 1522 Fries published a slightly reduced edition of Ptolemy’s Geographia with revised versions of Waldseemüller’s maps. He replaced „Terra Incognita” with „Terra Nova”, added some – previously unknown – geographical names, and complemented the work with an inscription about Columbus and with vignettes of cannibal Indians and an opossum. Our copy is the second of the two Strasbourg issues of Fries’ „Geographicae enarrationis libri octo”. The title, additional Latin text surrounded by fine borders and a xylograph illustration on the back, depicting Columbus encountering the natives.
Dimensions: 285 x 375 (385 x 490) mm. Fine copy with slight toning along centrefold.
