The first edition of one of the most influential works of the first wave of the Counter-Reformation. Saint Peter Canisius, a Jesuit monk from the Low Countries, came to the court of Vienna at the request of Ferdinand I, where he compiled his work, which was published in numerous editions until the end of the century, as a response to Luther's Large Catechism. The beautiful print is adorned with three full-page, partially coloured woodcuts. The first depicts Christ on the cross, and the second depicts him among small children. The last page shows an empty cross with a dragon and a lion below it, with the inscription "In hoc Signo vinces, & conculabis Leonem et Draconem". What makes our piece extremely interesting from a cultural history perspective is that it was in use in Hungary almost immediately after its publication. The first dated owner's entry (Michael Poll) dates from 1560. In addition, the inscription "Michael Wittkay de Ilosva" can also be read. We found only one mention of the latter: in 1569, he had a Ruthenian priest killed, so according to the court ruling, anyone could freely capture and behead him. No further information has survived about his fate or his book collecting activities. The entries certainly deserve further scholarly research.
Worn, contemporary leather. Spine slightly damaged.
