[Adam, Robert]: Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia.
London, 1764. IV l+ 4 letter+33 l+ 54 t.(61 engravings)
Robert Adam visited the city of Split in 1757 accompanied with the French architect Clérisseau and two drawers Brunias and Dewez. They spent five weeks assessing the emperor’s palace. The accompanying study was done very soon by William Robertson but the adaptation of the sketches and drawings to the printing plates took a longer time. The plates were made in Venice and Rome, they were later completed in London. The great work was published in 1764. The king recieved the first place on the subscriber list of the book, the first seven copies got special leather inlaid cover. The big sized, decorative, but at the same time very precise imagery satisfied the people’s interest for the Mediterranean culture in the 18. Century.
The book is a very respected piece of the international book market, it is valued between $9,000 and $44,000. As we know the work has not appeared in any auctions in Hungary before.
Contemporary, mottled, mean-looking paper cover, the text and the engravings are in good condition.
